When it comes to running socks, I'm pretty particular (In fact, I'm just pretty particular in everything, lol), especially when we're talking long miles, mixed terrain, and variable weather.

I recently tested the popular Smartwool Run Low Ankle Socks with Targeted Cushion and wanted to share how they performed on real-world runs.

Fit and Feel

The Smartwool Run Targeted Cushion Low Ankle Socks offer a snug fit around the midfoot, thanks to the 4 Degreeâ„¢ elite fit system with a les fitted looser feel around the forefoot / toe box area.

The Merino wool blend feels soft against the skin and provides excellent moisture-wicking properties, keeping my feet dry during even the most humid of runs - many of which seem to be right now in Florida.

However, I noticed that the forefoot and toe box area feel a bit loose, which might be a concern for runners who prefer a more secure, supportive fit in that region.

Performance

During my runs, the socks stay in place without slipping, and the Achilles tab effectively prevents them from sliding into my shoes while giving my achilles protection from and potential rubbing from heel counters on shoes.

The mesh zones offered good breathability, keeping my feet cool even on warmer days.

The targeted cushioning on the ball and heel provided noticeable comfort and impact protection, especially during longer runs.

However, if you prefer cushioning throughout the entire foot, this design might not be for you.

Durability

After multiple washes, the socks maintained their shape and performance, indicating good durability so far.

The Indestructawoolâ„¢ technology seems to contribute to their longevity, especially in high-wear areas like the heel and toe.

Time will tell though, and as always I'll update this review if any shockers happen, like holes appearing for example.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Effective moisture-wicking and breathability

  • Stays in place during runs without slipping
